SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Yitzchok Moully: The Pop Art Rabbi
DESCRIPTION:Yitzchok Moully is a conceptual artist whose work explores the intersection of spirituality and the material world we live in. Having grown up in Melbourne\, Australia\, with a few formative years in Hasidic Brooklyn\, Moully brings together the disparate colorful worlds of his hippie upbringing and Hasidic culture\, resulting in a unique palette of colors and ideas. \nMoully uses silkscreen and painting in his process but is careful not to be limited to any one medium\, rather he is constantly seeking out new modes of expressions to convey his ideas. \nA Rabbi by training\, Moully served as a Youth Rabbi in Basking Ridge\, NJ\, for ten years before embracing his creative spirit. \nThe Jewish Museum of New Jersey is located at historic Congregation Ahavas Sholom. The exhibit opens on Sunday\, September 16th at 1pm and continues through Sunday October 21st. Gallery hours are Sunday from 1-5 pm and by appointment. Refreshments will be served. $10 Suggested donation. Free on-site parking. \n

SUMMARY:Special Showing: Only A Number
DESCRIPTION:Writer/Producer/Director Steven Besserman writes\, “Over 35 years ago\, my Mother Aranka documented the horrors she endured at the hands of the Nazis and how she met my father\, Josef\, in a concentration camp\, separated by barbed wire\, physically and psychologically ravaged by starvation and brutality. And yet\, they fell in love\, giving each other the strength and will to survive.”\n\nOnly A Number is a different kind of Holocaust story\, told from the perspective of a child who wants to memorialize how much the indomitable spirit of his parents was able to overcome.  After the showing Steven Besserman will join us to discuss this unique documentary.  We thank Jewish Family Services for enabling us to make this presentation.

SUMMARY:Writing Our Way Home led by Charlotte Friedman MFA MSc
DESCRIPTION:Led by Charlotte Friedman MFA MSc (Barnard College English Dept.) \nJewish poetry has a beautiful history from the ancient Psalms to contemporary poets such as Yehuda Amichai and Alicia Ostriker.  In the hour and a half\, we’ll have together\, we will read and study several poems by Jewish authors\, delving into language\, rhythm\, and metaphors—exploring and expanding meaning.  In the shadow of those texts\, we’ll do some prompted writing.  Sharing what we’ve written\, listening to each other\, and reflecting on what we hear\, enables us to better understand the stories of others and our own. \nNo particular knowledge of poetry or writing experience is necessary to participate in the workshop. \nOpen to the community. TJC members – no fee; $5 for non-TJC members
