SUMMARY:‘Sarge’ in Howell
DESCRIPTION:Comedian-singer-pianist Steven “Sarge” Pickman performs at Congregation Ahavat Olam\, Howell\, at 2 p.m. \nPickman\, who has performed on “The Late Show” and at Radio City Music Hall\, is a “savant” who has been entertaining since the age of 6. \nRaised by adoptive Jewish parents\, Pickman struggled to understand his black heritage. Struggles with his identity led to alcohol\, drugs\, gambling\, and a period of homelessness. He quit substance abuse in 1990 and has been clean ever since. \nAfter studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute\, Pickman wrote\, performed on\, and produced “Best Damn Sports Show Period” and worked for ABC’s Wide World of Sports before turning to comedy and opening for such headliners as Aretha Franklin and The Beach Boys. \nKnown as a pioneer of “Comedy Therapy\,” Pickman performs in treatment centers and recovery residences\, speaking about his own issues with addiction. His comedy recovery film\, “Sarge Behind Bars\,” shot at the Casper Wyoming Re-Entry Center in Wyoming\, combined standup with interviews with the facility’s residents. In 2015\, he released a memoir\, “I’m Still Standing Up.” \nPickman will be available after the show to sell and autograph his autobiography\, “Black Boychik.” Tickets cost $18\, $36 for priority reserved seating\, and $54 for premium reserved seating. Tickets for $108 (a block of four must be purchased) include a meet-and-greet reception before the show and seating in the first three rows. Call 732-333-1299.
