SUMMARY:Temple Sholom Commemorates the 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sholom of Scotch Plains announces its 2018 Kristallnacht program to be held on Sunday November 4 at 7pm. Dr. Magdelena Wrobel\, Project Manager for the Leo Baeck Institute of New York and Berlin\, will present “Posts from the Past: Personal Stories on the 80th Anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Events of 1938.” These personal stories are reports from Jews from 1938. The Leo Baeck Institute is the premier repository for archival materials from German and German speaking countries in Europe.\n\nEighty years ago\, on November 9-10\, 1938\, the Nazi party escalated its anti-Semitic campaign against the Jews through a pogrom in Germany\, Austria and part of Czechoslovakia. Prior to that\, in March 1938\, Nazi Germany annexed Austria (the Anschluss); at the end of September 1938\, England\, France\, Italy and Germany signed the infamous Munich Agreement which allowed Nazi Germany to annex parts of Czechoslovakia and eventually led to the dismemberment of that country. And on December 2\, 1938\, the Kindertransport began\, eventually sending 10\,000 children from Germany\, Austria and Czechoslovakia to safety in England and elsewhere\, most of whom never saw their parents again. Dr. Wrobel earned her Ph.D. from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich in 2013 and has served as a visiting scholar at the University of Haifa\, University College London and Columbia University. Before coming to the Leo Baeck Institute in New York\, she worked at the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous in their Rescuer Support Program and served as Assistant to the Ambassador at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Poland to the United Nations.\n\nThe program is free and open to the public. Temple Sholom is located at 1925 Lake Avenue in Scotch Plains\, NJ. For additional information call the Temple office at 908-889-4900.

SUMMARY:Holiday Boutique
DESCRIPTION:Temple Sholom of Scotch Plains will host its annual Holiday Boutique on Sunday\, November 18\, 9:30 am – 1:30 pm\, where shoppers can find Thanksgiving host gifts\, teacher gifts and winter holiday presents. \nTreat yourself and find gifts for family and friends. She exclaims “The thing that I enjoy most about my business is the freedom to create new and unique flavor combinations like my blueberry lemon jam\, strawberry banana jam\, carrot ginger jam\, and roasted garlic and sweet onion jam.” \nPeace Love Light – After years of searching for stylish\, contemporary Chanukah decorations\, interior designer Lisa Fero decided to make her own. She now employs artisans across the US and Israel to skillfully craft decorations that honor Jewish traditions while focusing on a modern color palette and current design trends. \nHalma Geomaps – Owned by Zachary Halma\, a Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School graduate and current NJIT civil engineering student\, Halma Geomaps combines Zachary’s passion for art and engineering\, along with his desire to create unique\, affordable gifts. They loved her work so much that they convinced her to start a business. She uses t-shirts\, ties\, towels (think baby clothes\, college t-shirts) and turns them into truly personal gifts for birthdays\, graduations and holidays. \nGimme Sugar Bake Shop – Indulge in a sweet treat from Gimme Sugar Bake Shop. Owner Dyanna Rau of Westfield fell in love with cookie-baking and decorating after taking a class a few years ago. She searches high and low for unique molds and design tools\, enabling her to create endless possibilities in terms of shape and color. Her cookies are not only beautiful\, but delicious. Her booth will feature sample cookie platters for Thanksgiving. She is ready to take an order for your next special occasion. \nMatch Point Stationery – Owner Barbra Kogan has been designing personalized stationery items such as note cards\, address stampers\, stickers\, clipboards and acrylic items for the last 10 years. She also designs specialized invitations for bar/bat mitzvahs and other significant life cycle events\, making the event planning process fun and easy for busy parents.
