Many were astounded that over 90,000 people filled MetLife stadium for the Siyyum ha-Shas, the completion of the 7½ year daily study of Talmud. And that’s not including the thousands that participated in similar celebrations around the world!
What is this incredible text that has served as the foundation of Jewish thought and practice over the past almost 2000 years? Why is knowledge of the Talmud considered to be one of the highest achievements in Jewish learning?
Join us as we explore one of the central texts of Jewish civilization. We will study sections from the first tractate (massekhet) of the Babylonian Talmud, Berakhoth (“Blessings”), a tractate crucial for understanding the beginnings of our liturgy, but also leaps into issues of theology, folklore, rabbinic leadership, even magic. This is also the tractate currently studied under the new cycle of daily Talmud study.
No background is necessary, the texts will be provided in both Hebrew/Aramaic and English. The texts will be studied in the traditional hevruta style, in pairs or small groups, then together as a class.
All are welcome, please RSVP to the Temple office.
