“The Theologies of Bruce Springsteen” Professor Azzan Yadin-Israel

January 12 , 9:30 am

Free

Azzan Yadin-Israel, Professor of Jewish Studies, Rutgers University will return to Congregation Shomrei Emunah for the first of a series of three lectures. Yadin-Israel spent two years mining Springsteen songs for his book, The Grace of God and the Grace of Man: The Theologies of Bruce Springsteen, unearthing numerous Old Testament themes and reinterpretations of Bible passages from his lyrics.

More than passing references to “sin” and “salvation,” “redemption” and metaphorical “promise lands,” the book explores a definitive theological arc that spans Springsteen’s albums, breaking down common themes into three sections: Early Works, Sin, Grace and the Struggle Within, and Springsteen’s Midrash.

He will offer the D’var Torah during services that morning and continue with Q&A at a special Lunch & Learn at Kiddush.
