Yom HaShoah Commemoration at Congregation Beth Israel

April 28, 2019 , 5:30 pm

Free

Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains will commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, known as Yom HaShoah in Hebrew, on Sunday, April 28, at 5:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the community, and is appropriate for families.

The event will feature presentations by guest speakers Heather Markowitz and Eva Vogel. Heather, a past president of Congregation Beth Israel, will share the story behind the Czech Holocaust Torah currently displayed in the synagogue’s lobby. She will explain how this sacred scroll was rescued from Czechoslovakia and eventually made it to safety in Scotch Plains, and she will speak about the importance of keeping this story alive.

Eva Vogel, from the Drew University Center for Holocaust/Genocide Study, will describe her parents’ experiences as prisoners in the Auschwitz concentration camp, and she will speak about their Jewish life together after liberation. Eva will also discuss her own life as the child of Holocaust survivors.

For more information, call the synagogue office at (908) 889-1830.
