A Jewish woman finds love in Nigeria

Eliana Saks
Eliana Saks

Eliana Saks, the guest speaker for the Kol Rina Independent Minyan’s Brunch and Learn online program, will talk about “Finding Love and Jewish Community in Nigeria.” The talk for the South Orange minyan, free and open to the public, is set for Sunday, February 6, at 10:30 a.m.

Ms. Saks, a production editor in Philadelphia, is engaged to Moshe Nwafor, a Nigerian Jew and the leader of a small but thriving Jewish community in Abuja, Nigeria. Their story, “Finding Love and Jewish Community in Nigeria,” recently was featured in a front page story in Hadassah Magazine.

Ms. Saks will discuss how she met her fiancé at the beginning of the pandemic and how she began to know, assist, and advocate for his community. She will give an overview of the history of the Igbo Jewish community and describe their lives, practices, and struggles today, as a Jewish community on the fringes, as they work to gain access to Jewish materials, education, and kosher food. She also will talk about the large-scale conversion to Judaism that took place in Abuja in August. Email kolrinanjwelcome@gmail.com for the link.
