Albert Schleifer

Albert Usher Schleifer, 86, of Toms River died June 1, 2016. He grew up in the Bronx and lived in Westfield before moving to Toms River in 2015.

An architect, Mr. Schleifer launched his architectural career in New York City, working at firms including Gehron & Seltzer; Brodsky, Hopf and Adler; Walter Kidd Constructors; McDowell-Goldstein; Roe/Eliseo; and Elson T. Killam Associates. In 1986, he set up his own architectural business.

He received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Kansas State University in 1954. 

He served as First Lieutenant in the United States Army Signal Corps.

Active in community life, he served as chairman of the Westfield Neighborhood Rehabilitation Association and trustee of the Westfield Senior Citizens Housing Corporation. Recently, he was honored by Westfield Senior Citizens Housing for his long service. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Renee C. (Stern); his son, Douglas M. (Maureen M. Smyth) of East Amwell; his daughter, Heidi J. Schleifer-Fleischman (Edward Fleischman) of Morristown; a sister, Pauline Mayer of Olivebridge, NY; and two grandchildren.

Services were held June 3 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
