On the eve of Yom Kippur, 20 years ago, Rebbetzin Chaya Esther Zaltzman was killed in a tragic accident. A year later, the mikvah in Hillside was built in her memory. It carries both her name and the name of her granddaughter, Bat Sheva, who died a year before she did.

The mikvah committee, under the leadership of Rebbetzin Shterney Kanelsky, the daughter of Rebbetzin Chaya Esther, z”l, and the mother of Bat Sheva, z”l, undertook a project to expand the mikvah. A reservoir was built to ensure that rainwater is available consistently. Shanie and Chaim Cillo and Lina Kanchik are the project’s main co-sponsors.

The kashrut of the mikvah and the reservoir are under the guidance of Rabbi Yirmiyahu Katz, who has built more than 250 mikvahs and is an expert in the halacha about building and maintaining a mikvah.
