Bernard Layton

Bernard H. Layton, 89, of Livingston died July 22, 2016. Born in Newark, he also had lived in Irvington, in Mountainside for 59 years, and in Somerset for three years. 

Dr. Layton maintained a dental practice for over 60 years in Scotch Plains and Mountainside, retiring 10 years ago. He was also chief of dentistry at Runnells Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Berkeley Heights. 

He held a BS from Upsala College in East Orange and received his DDS from Temple University’s Maurice H. Kornberg School of Dentistry in Philadelphia. He was a life member of the Alpha Omega dental fraternity. 

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a radar specialist and participated in the search for ships lost in the Bermuda Triangle. 

An avid boater and skier, he was a member of several yacht clubs in New Jersey, Connecticut, and on Long Island. 

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nina (Koeppel); his son, Alan (Penny) of Summit; two daughters, Susan (Jeffrey) Finkelstein of Livingston and Lauren (Anthony) Biscotti of Acton, Mass.; a sister, Mae Stern of Essex Fells; and six grandchildren. 

Services were held July 24 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
