Burton Cohen
Burton David Cohen, 76, of Scotch Plains died May 5, 2017. Born and raised in Staten Island, he lived in Westfield for many years before moving to Scotch Plains 25 years ago.
Dr. Cohen taught for many years at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, and was a senior partner of the Bayonne Dental Group for 49 years.
He graduated from Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1963 and received his D.M.D. from New Jersey College of Dentistry in 1967.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969 at the U.S. Army Hospital in Fort Ord, Calif., until his honorable discharge as a captain.
He was a member of the American, NJ, and Hudson County dental associations. He was also a dental consultant for the Jersey City Head Start Program and the Bayonne Head Start Program.
He was involved with many philanthropic organizations during his lifetime and was active with veterans’ organizations.
He is survived by his wife of 11 years, Cheryl; two sons, Steven C. (Katie) and Richard (Lauren); three stepchildren, David (Jen) Asarnow, Dawn (Chris) Fox, and Jeff (Sheryl) Asarnow; a sister, Sharon Gruby; six grandchildren; and five step-grandchildren.
Services were held May 8 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Burton D. Cohen Memorial Scholarship Fund at Temple Emanu-El, Westfield; National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation; or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
