Celebrating Purim in the community

Purim begins this year on Monday night, March 9, and continues on Tuesday, March 10. The following synagogues and organizations will hold celebrations open to the community:

Congregation Beth Israel, Scotch Plains — A Purim carnival will be held on Sunday, March 8, 9 a.m.-noon. Free pizza, hamantaschen, cookies, and popcorn will be served.

Families with children in second grade and below may attend the carnival from 9 until 10; those with children in third grade and older are invited, 10:30 a.m.-noon. From 10-10:30, a Purim shpiel (play) will be performed for both age groups.

Children with sensory issues and their parents may attend the carnival from 10-10:30 a.m., when the carnival area will be quieter.

A service with a Megillah reading will be held on Monday, March 9, at 5:30 p.m. for children and at 7:30 for adults.

B’nai Shalom
, West Orange — A Young Family Purim Holiday Workshop will be held Sunday, March 8, at 11 a.m.

Purim night Megillah readings (full and family) will be held Monday, March 9, at 7 p.m. Hamantaschen will be served.

A Purim Meal and Spiel will be held Tuesday, March 10, at 6 p.m. The festive dairy meal will be followed by a performance of “A Shushan State of Mind,” the Purim story presented through the songs of Billy Joel. Cost is $10, $18 at the door; register for the meal at clc.bnaishalom.net.



Chabad Center of Northwest NJ
, Rockaway — A Megillah reading and animated Purim video will be held at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, March 9, followed by a celebration including live music and hamantaschen.

A Grand Family “Purim In England” celebration with a full-course feast will take place at the White Meadow Lake Country Club, Rockaway, at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, following a Megillah reading at 5.

Chabad of SE Morris County — A Grand Purim Party will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, at Powerhouse Studios, East Hanover. It will include a Megillah reading, deluxe buffet dinner, music, and entertainment.

Chabad of West Orange — A Megillah reading on Tuesday, March 10, at 5:30 p.m. will be followed by a community Purim seudah featuring Jewish rap artist Jesse Marcus and the story of Reuven Hererra — who ventured from the Peruvian Amazon to the Australian outback to discovering Judaism.

Congregation Beth Hatikvah, Summit — “5 Senses of Judaism,” a free Purim-themed program for ages five and under, will be held Saturday, March 14, 9:30-11 a.m. Register at bethhatikvah.org/events.

An “Annie”-themed Purim Shpiel will be held March 14 at 7 p.m.

Maayan, West Orange — The inclusive Orthodox congregation will hold Maariv at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 9, followed by a Megillah reading led by men and women. Visit maayan-nj.org or contact info@maayan-nj.org.


 

Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, South Orange — A Purim Extravaganza will be held Sunday, March 8, 10-11:30 a.m.; children with sensory sensitivities may attend a pre-Extravaganza event from 9:30 to 10. Temple Beth Shalom, Livingston — A Purim carnival will be held Sunday, March 8, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Snacks, pizza, and sundaes will be served. Cost is $20. Contact 973-992-3600 or office@tbsnj.org or register at tbsnjpta.com.

“TBS Purim: Out of the Park” will be held Monday, March 9, at 6:15 p.m., featuring an evening service and Megillah reading; singing, races, and entertainment between chapters; and free ballpark-style refreshments (hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels). Contact 973-992-3600 or office@tbsnj.org.


 

Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston — A Purim carnival will be held Sunday, March 8, 10 a.m.-noon (special carnival preview for ages 5 and under, 9:30-10). Erev Purim services with a Megillah reading will be held on Monday, March 9, at 7 p.m. Call 973-994-2290.


 

Union County Torah Center, Westfield — A pre-Purim hamantaschen bake will be held Sunday, March 8, at 11 a.m. Cost is $5/child; RSVP at torahcenterchabad.org or call 908-789-5252.

A free Purim Story & Crafts hour will be held on March 8 at 5 p.m. at Barnes & Noble, Clark. RSVP to 908-789-5252 or info@torahcenterchabad.org or online at torahcenterchabad.org.

A Megillah reading followed by hamantaschen and a l’chaim will be held on Monday, March 9, at 7:30 p.m.

A Megillah reading will be held on Tuesday, March 10, at 8:45 a.m.

A family Purim Celebration will be held on March 10, 5-6 p.m., featuring a pizza dinner, masquerade contest, and a magic show with Magic Mordechai and balloon twisting. A multimedia Megillah reading will follow at 6. The fee is $10/family.

At 7 p.m. a Purim dinner will be followed by a comedy show with Mark (Mordechai) Brier. Cost is $25 adult, $15 child. RSVP by March 18.
