Celina Gainer
Celina Gainer (Leibler), 89, of Maplewood died Oct. 15, 2012. Born in Tarnow, Poland, she survived ghetto liquidation, concentration camps, and labor camps during the Holocaust. At the close of World War II she relocated to Sweden, where her one surviving family member, an older sister, was being rehabilitated from TB after transport out of Bergen-Belsen. She lived with a family in Sweden for several years, working as an assistant in a polio research laboratory. She eventually followed her sister to New York City, where she worked in a bacteriology lab at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Mrs. Gainer participated in a variety of community activities.
She is survived by her husband, Isaac, whom she married in 1953; her daughter, Ann of Altamont, NY; two sons, Mark of Charleston, SC, and Thomas of Portland, Ore.; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Oct. 17 with arrangements by Louis Suburban Chapel, Fair Lawn. Memorial contributions may be made to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, 1399 South Roxbury Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90035.
