Clara Beckerman (Lerner), 103, of West Orange died Dec. 29, 2019. She was born in New York City and raised in Plymouth, Pa. She raised her family in Irvington before moving to West Orange.
Mrs. Beckerman retired as a school nurse for the Newark Board of Education, during which she took care of thousands of elementary school children and staff members. In the mid-1960s during the summer, she worked in the Head Start program, taking care of the health needs of children entering kindergarten. During the Cold War, she volunteered as a civil defense nurse at the local bomb shelter. She also assisted in providing the Albert Sabin oral polio vaccine in 1961, preparing doses of the vaccine for citizens at the local elementary school. She had worked at Newark Beth Israel, St. Barnabas, and Irvington General hospitals.
She attended nursing school at Bushwick Hospital in Brooklyn, where she became a Registered Nurse. She received her bachelor’s degree from Jersey City State College.
A soprano, she was a member of the choir at Congregation B’nai Israel in Irvington and later at Jewish Federation Plaza in West Orange. She played piano and mandolin at performances for many community groups.
Predeceased by her husband, Sam, in 2001, she is survived by her daughter, Phyllis (Barry) Rodin of West Orange; her son, Louis (Ann) of Watchung; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held Dec. 30 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
