Donald Merritt Altman
Donald Merritt Altman, Esq., 83, of Scotch Plains died Oct. 20, 2011. He resided in Passaic for most of his life.
Mr. Altman worked for the State of New Jersey as Counsel to Department of Treasury, Deputy State Treasurer, Counsel to Division of Budget and Accounting, Assistant Attorney General for Legislation, and Assistant Attorney General for Administrative Agency Advice. He retired in the position of Assistant Attorney General for New Jersey. As AAG, he was also a member of the Supreme Court Committee on Juvenile and Domestic Relations Courts.
He graduated cum laude in business administration from Rutgers University in 1949. He graduated from Rutgers Law School in 1953 while holding the positions of managing editor and then editor in chief of the Rutgers Law Review. After a clerkship with Bilder, Bilder and Kaufman, he passed bar examinations in both New Jersey and the District of Columbia.
He served on active duty in the Army for three years in the Korean War, and was honorably discharged with the ranking of 1st Lieutenant within the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He received the National Defense Service Medal.
He is survived by his daughter, Heather Kumpf of Scotch Plains; his sister, Dorothy Frederich of Clifton; and two grandchildren.
Services were held Oct. 23 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Runnells Specialized Hospital Volunteers Guild, Berkeley Heights.
