Edward Berman

Dr. Edward James Berman, 81, of Los Angeles died May 30, 2012. He was born and raised in Newark and moved to California after marrying Roberta Ann Zelan.

After moving to Los Angeles, Dr. Berman spent 49 years in practice as a cardiologist in the South Bay area.

He graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark in 1948 and attended the University of Pittsburgh on an athletic scholarship, where he earned nine varsity letters in indoor and outdoor track and cross country. He graduated first in his class, summa cum laude, and then received his medical degree from the university in 1956, after which he interned at Newark Beth Israel Hospital.

He served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

A lifelong runner, he completed 103 marathons, including 25 consecutive years in the Boston Marathon.

He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Berman Gonzalez and Karen Berman; his son, Ian; and three grandchildren.

Services were held June 1 with arrangements by Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary, Los Angeles.
