Edwin A. Marmon

Edwin A. Marmon, 88, of Lake Worth, Fla., died Oct. 10, 2010. He lived in Millburn for more than 50 years before moving to Florida 12 years ago.

Mr. Marmon followed his father into the floral business, where they grew and distributed carnations and roses to the New York and Newark markets and received several patents for new varieties of flowers. Later, he became a real estate developer, creating tracks of single-family homes throughout central and northern New Jersey. Edwin founded Marmon Mortgage Co., providing commercial mortgage services to both landlords and developers throughout the United States.

He entered Ohio State University in 1939 at age 17, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu and ROTC. In January 1942 he graduated with a BS in industrial engineering.

At age 19 he entered OCS at Fort Sill, Okla., where he was later commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He began his Army service as a liaison pilot for the field artillery flying Piper Cubs. He was an officer of the 19th infantry combat team of the 24th infantry division. He earned the Purple Heart, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star for service in the Philippines. He completed his service as a captain in Japan during the occupation and received an honorable discharge in December 1945.

While living in New Jersey he was a member of the Kiwanis, a past president of the Maplewood Country Club, and former member of the board of trustees of Congregation B’nai Israel, Millburn. In Florida he volunteered for the Sheriff’s Department of Palm Beach County and was an active member of the golf community Fountains in Lake Worth. He was also adept at bargello needlework, creating beautiful pieces of original abstract designs for over 30 years.

Predeceased by his wife of over 60 years, Aileen, in 2009, he is survived by three sons, Robert of Phoenix, Larry of San Diego, and Harold of Lewes, Del.; his daughter, Jane Maida of Skillman; two sisters, Shirley Finkelstein of New York City and Nancy Dickson of Skillman; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Oct. 14 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Palm Beach County, West Palm Beach, Fla.; or Congregation B’nai Israel.
