Ethel Berman
Ethel Eleanor Berman (Strauss), 89, of Livingston died Oct. 10, 2017. Born in the Bronx, she moved to Newark and lived in West Orange for 51 years.
Mrs. Berman taught middle school science at Hillside Avenue School, Cranford, for over 21 years. After retiring in 1993, she served as a substitute teacher at Solomon Schechter Day School.
She graduated from South Side High School, Newark. She then graduated magna cum laude from Montclair State College, and earned a master’s degree in teaching from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts.
She was active in the Jewish community, where her husband presided as a hazzan in several synagogues in the metropolitan New York/New Jersey area.
She is survived by her husband, Edward W.; three daughters, Caren (Ted) Shapiro, Anna (James) McLaren, and Jacqueline (Martin) Berman-Gorvine; her son, Elliot; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services were held Oct. 15 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to MSU Foundation (in memory of Ethel Berman), Montclair State University, 1 Normal Ave., Montclair, N.J. 07043.
