Eva Halpern
Eva Halpern (Krenkel), known as “Chavche,” 88, of Springfield died March 1, 2012.
A Holocaust survivor from Poland, she began to rebuild her life in a displaced persons camp in Germany after the war ended, and married Bernard Stein (also a survivor of her hometown, Chorostkow). They immigrated with their first son Ben to the United States and pushed forward with her surviving brother and sister in the farm country of western New Jersey, where there was a small community of survivors.
After her husband died, she married the late Arie Halpern, a fellow survivor of her hometown who was also a recent widower.
For more than 40 years she helped support the righteous gentiles who helped save her, and their families.
She was a life member of Hadassah of Union/Elizabeth, the Women’s Division of the Jewish Federation of Central NJ, and the Elizabeth chapter of AMIT.
She is survived by two sons, Ben and Henry Stein; three daughters, Bella Savran, Shelley Paradis, and Nanette Brenner; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services were held March 4 at Congregation Israel of Springfield with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield.
