New Jersey Senate president Nicholas Scutari invited Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky of Bris Avrohom in Hillside to give the invocation at the New Jersey Senate’s opening session on January 8.

Rabbi Kanelsky reflected on the horrific occurrences that Israel has been facing since October 7 and proposed ideas to help the devastation and to prevent evil. He suggested that lawmakers “designate a time daily to praise and thank God, ideally in the morning. When there is belief and appreciation for God, the whole society lives in a different spirit.”

He took out a dollar bill and continued, “it’s the only currency in the world that says In God we Trust.” He then put it in the charity box, demonstrating the importance of giving to charity. He asked that observers’ take-away from the invocation should be to live with belief in God, to regularly give to charity, and to implement the Seven Noahide Laws routinely in the state of New Jersey.

He ended with a blessing to the lawmakers that God grant them health and good cheer.
