Fred Wachtel

Dr. Fred Wachtel, 94, of Maplewood died Oct. 31, 2017. Born in Elizabeth, he lived in West Orange from 1960 until 2010, when he moved to Maplewood.

Dr. Wachtel was a cardiologist with a private practice in Newark and Irvington, since 1956, retiring in the 1990s. He taught at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; his main hospital affiliation was Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. 

He attended Montclair State Teachers College and earned his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. 

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during World War II. 

He was a member of Oheb Shalom Congregation of South Orange and the American Heart Association and served as president of the Essex County Heart Association. 

He was a member of the Berkeley and Orange Lawn tennis clubs. He was also a lifelong musician, playing the clarinet, saxophone, and flute. 

Predeceased by his wife, Miriam (Rados), he is survived by three sons, Andrew of Kyrgyzstan, Michael of Princeton, and David of New York City; a sister, Gloria Segel of Union; and eight grandchildren. 

Services were held Nov. 2 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association.
