Harriet Sussman
Harriet Rose Sussman (Sacks), 93, of Rockaway died Oct. 18, 2019. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she later lived in Jersey City, Pine Brook, and Manchester before moving to Rockaway.
For most of her professional career, Mrs. Sussman was an elementary school teacher in West Caldwell.
She was a graduate of Brooklyn College and received a master’s degree in remedial reading from William Paterson College.
Active in ORT and League of Women Voters in her earlier years, she later pursued a passion for playing tennis, was a TV presenter in her community, and performed as part of a theater group. Among the issues she was committed to were Democratic Party principles, Israel, and women’s reproductive rights.
Predeceased by her husband of 68 years, Seymour (Sy), in December 2017, she is survived by two daughters, Ilene (Stuart) Schwartz of Rockaway and Diane Benjuya of Kfar Saba, Israel; her son, Jeffrey (Annette Zrihen) of Brookline, Mass.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held Oct. 20 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels. Memorial contributions may be made to World Wildlife Fund.
