Helene Frieland

Helene Reiter Frieland, 91, of Maplewood died Dec. 8, 2015. Born in Chicago, she lived for most of her life in the New York metropolitan area, including 61 years in Westfield. 

A flutist, Mrs. Frieland played professionally with Phil Spitalny and His All-Girl Orchestra, and was the first flutist of the Plainfield Symphony for many years. She was a private flute teacher for many area students.

She graduated from The Juilliard School of Music. 

She was a past president of The Musical Club of Westfield, which she was a member of until her death. 

An avid tennis player, she was a member of the Westfield Tennis Club for more than 25 years. 

Predeceased by her first husband of 22 years, Bernard L. Reiter, in 1968, and her second husband of 42 years, Seymour H. Frieland, in 2014, she is survived by three sons, Glenn (Lyn), Donald (Kim), and Neil (Lauren); her daughter, Lauren (Richard); a brother, Mitchell Edson of Fredericksburg, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. 

Services were held Dec. 13 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to The Musical Club’s Scholarship Fund or Temple Emanu-El, both located in Westfield.
