Herman Schachtel
Herman D. Schachtel, 87, a 60-year resident of Short Hills, died Jan. 9, 2017. He was born in Newark.
Mr. Schachtel spent 10 years working in the family business, Schachtel’s Bakery, which had been well known in Newark for 50 years. He moved on to do custom home construction and then had a 51-year career as an insurance salesman and broker.
He graduated from Columbia High School and attended Rider College, where he captained the tennis team.
He served for 49 months in the U.S. Air Force, where he graduated from its Flying School, was an instructor in the Control Tower School, and a controller in a control tower.
He was an avid deep sea fisherman and a little league coach and was involved with charitable organizations, particularly the Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad.
He was a member of Congregation B’nai Israel in Millburn for over 50 years and chaired many committees. He was the past president of the Millburn-Short Hills B’nai B’rith Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn; two sons, William and Steven; a sister, Hermine Hammer; and five grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 11 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, or Millburn-Short Hills First Aid Squad.
