Irving Gerstein

Irving Gerstein, 94, of Palm Beach, Fla., died June 25, 2013. He was born and lived in New York City before moving to Palm Beach 20 years ago.

Mr. Gerstein and other family members grew their father’s rug and weather-strip business into Thermwell Products Co., Inc., a 100-year-old, three-generation concern in Mahwah. He taught graduate-level classes in New York University’s Stern School of Business.

He attended New York University.

In World War II he served in the Headquarters Company of the 13 Army Air Corps in the South Pacific, where he rose to the rank of captain.

He was a member of Temple Emanuel, Great Neck, NY, and was involved with North Shore Hospital, United Jewish Appeal, Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind, American Friends of Magen David Adom, Friends of Israel Defense Forces, American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, and breast cancer charities, including the Beth Tortolani Breast Cancer Foundation, which honored him as man of the year a few years ago.

A champion golf and tennis player, he was a past member of Fresh Meadow Country Club in New York and a member of High Ridge Country Club in Florida.

He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Muriel; his daughter, Nanci (Robert) Schwartz of North Caldwell; and two grandchildren.

Services were held June 28 with arrangements by Beth Israel Memorial Chapel, Boynton Beach, Fla. Memorial contributions be made in honor of his grandson (a 10-year survivor) to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 1311 Mamaroneck Ave., Suite 310, White Plains, NY 10605.
