James Najarian

James Stephen Najarian of Randolph died Nov. 5, 2017. He was born in Leonia and moved to Randolph in 1978. 

Dr. Najarian graduated from Rutgers University as a Cook Scholar and attended the University of Wisconsin Medical School, graduating with highest honors. He did his internship and medical residency at Beth Israel in New York City and was awarded both Intern and Resident of the Year. He did his nephrology fellowship at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, achieving the rank of major. He served as the medical director of the Department of Medicine at the U.S. Walsom Army Hospital at Fort Dix, and received a commendation for Performance Beyond the Call of Duty.

He opened his practice, Randolph Medical and Renal Associates, from which he recently retired. He was instrumental in founding the first freestanding dialysis center in the area, The Dialysis Center of Northwest Jersey, where he served as medical director for 15 years. At separate times he was the secretary, treasurer, and president of the medical staff of the original Dover
General Hospital.

He enjoyed sailing with his family on the Hudson River and beyond the Verrazano Narrows. 

He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; two daughters, Grace Eisenberg and Lily Najarian (Mark) Clark; his son, David James (Lauren); a brother, Thomas; a sister, Barbara; his father-in-law, Leo Lewin; and nine grandchildren. 

Services were held Nov. 7 with arrangements by J.L. Apter Memorial Chapels of Dover. Memorial contributions may be made for science, research, and conservation programs at The New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd., Bronx, N.Y.; attn.: Lisa Sifre.
