Jean Berkenwald
Jean Berkenwald (Zylberberg), 86, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died May 17, 2011. Born in Lodz, Poland, she lived in Bloomfield and New York City after immigrating to the United States.
Before retirement, Mrs. Berkenwald worked as a finisher for Jerry Silverman in New York City.
She arrived in New York City in August 1947, the sole survivor of her large family, having lost her parents and seven brothers and sisters in the Shoa. She survived Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen and was liberated in April 1945 in Bremen, Germany.
She was active in Hadassah and the Holocaust Survivors of the Palm Beaches.
Predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Israel, and her son, Martin, she is survived by her daughter, Elaine of South Orange, and three grandsons.
Services were held May 18 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah.
