Jeffrey Cahn
Jeffrey Barton Cahn, 70, of Livingston and Scottsdale, Ariz., died March 31, 2013. He also had a summer home in Long Branch.
Mr. Cahn was an attorney for his entire adult life. He joined Sills Beck, Cummis, Radin & Tischman in Newark, where he became partner and practiced until his retirement in 2009. He litigated a variety of complex cases, including product liability and malpractice matters. As founder of the Intellectual Property Department at Sills, he became a well-known expert in trademark and copyright law, and registered hundreds of trademarks in the United States and abroad.
He was admitted to practice in New Jersey and New York, and before the U.S. District Court for the District of NJ, the SDNY, EDNY, several other federal courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a member of the Intellectual Property Sections of the American, NJ and NY state bar associations. At the latter, he served as cochair of the Copyright Law and Meetings Committees and was also a member of its Governing Group. He was an active member of the International Trademark Association, where he served on the INTA Publishing Board for years. He was principal editor of Trademark Administration: A Guide for Paralegals and Administrators, was co-editor of the textbook Trademark Basics and coauthor of Use of Another’s Trademark, and was consulting editor for the second edition of Trademark Administration.
He earned his JD from Rutgers Law School in 1967, where he was elected research editor of the Rutgers Law Review. He received a BA from Indiana University.
He is survived by his wife, Miriam; two daughters, Lauren (Eric) Schoenfeld of Bedford, NY, and Vanessa (Andre) Gorelkin of Roseland; and three grandsons.
Services were held April 3 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to North Shore-LIJ Health System Foundation, 125 Community Dr., Great Neck, NY 11021.
