Jerome Stein

Jerome M. Stein, 79, of West Orange died Jan. 21, 2015. Born in Belton, SC, he was raised in Newark.

Mr. Stein had vice presidential assignments in the Prudential Insurance Company of America’s Eastern Home Office, Comptroller’s Office, and Personnel and Actuarial Divisions as well as Small Group & Individual Health Systems & Service Restructuring, where he was employed from 1957 until 1994.

He graduated from Weequahic High School in Newark. He attended New York University and graduated with honors from Columbia University in 1957.

Mr. Stein was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries since 1963, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries since 1965, and an Associate of the English Institute of Actuaries. He was a Correspondent of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries.

He served on the Education & Examination Committee (1964-present) and was the chair of the Committee on Review of Literature. He served on the Professional Responsibility Committee of the American Academy of Actuaries. He also had memberships in Health Insurance Association of America, the American Council on Life Insurance, and Life Insurance Marketing Research Association. He collaborated in and contributed to a NIH-funded study of the ethical issues of genetic testing in relation to insurance (1992-1996).

In the community, he was involved with American Jewish Committee of Essex County, Urban League of Essex County, Newark Committee for Better Public Schools, West Orange Lodge of B’nai B’rith, and Congregation Ahawas Achim B’nai David & Jacob in West Orange. He had been a volunteer lecturer at Daughters of Israel since 1995.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rhoda (Strauss); his son, Joel (Karen); his daughter, Beth Sue (Jeffrey) Tantleff; and six grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 23 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
