Joan Ilene Silver (Dershowitz), 65, of Kendall Park died March 1, 2020. Born in Jersey City, she was raised in Springfield, later moving to Washington, D.C., and to Kendall Park in 1991.
Mrs. Silver began her career in Atlanta, where she taught elementary students with special needs. She moved to Washington and taught hearing-impaired children, and then worked for the Montgomery County, Md., Human Rights Commission. After returning to New Jersey, she worked with troubled youth at the Middlesex County Detention Center in North Brunswick.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in special education and her master’s degree in applied behavioral psychology.
She produced dozens of oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings.
She is survived by her husband, Jerry; her children, Ally and Danny; her mother, Diane Dershowitz; and her brother, Michael Dershowitz.
Services were held March 8 with arrangements by Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick.
