Joel Louis Pitman

Joel Louis Pitman, 74, of Morris Township died Aug. 13, 2011. Born in Newark and raised in Irvington, he previously lived in Livingston.

Mr. Pitman was a certified civil trial attorney, representing clients in personal injury, product liability, and medical malpractice cases. He was admitted to the New Jersey and United States District Court bars in 1961. He served as chairman of the Union County Ethics Committee for several years and was cofounder and partner of the law firm Pitman, Mindas, Grossman, Lee, and Moore. He was a member of the NJ State, Essex County, and Union County bar associations.

He graduated from Irvington High School in 1954, Muhlenberg College in 1958, and Rutgers Law School in 1961.

He served in the U.S. Army in 1961 during the Berlin Crisis.

In his retirement, he wrote short stories and lectured on famous trials.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Wilma (Bernhaut); three daughters, Susan Kinney of Easton, Pa., Abby Smith of Johannesburg, South Africa, and Carey of New York; a brother, Bruce; and three grandchildren.

Services were held Aug. 15 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Memorial contributions may be made to Muhlenberg College Hillel, Allentown, Pa., or the Thomas Glasser Caregiver Center at Overlook Hospital, Summit.
