SOME 26 NEW JERSEYANS participated in the 13th annual Israel Ride from Jerusalem to Eilat, sponsored by Hazon and the Arava Institute. The program took place Nov. 8-14. It was the largest contingent of cyclers ever from the Garden State and the largest number of participants, a total of 189 riders from England, France, Australia, Israel, and the United States. Of the 26 from New Jersey, 17 were from Congregation B’nai Israel, Millburn; they formed the Desert Dawgs team.

The Israel Ride is an annual fund-raiser for Hazon, the Jewish environmental and food organization based in New York, and the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies, based in Israel. The Arava Institute brings together students from different religions and regions of the Middle East and the rest of the world to learn about the environment and address the region's environmental challenges. Jewish National Fund, a longtime supporter of the Arava Institute, is a partner in the ride.

The ride included three groups of cyclists averaging 75, 55, or 35 miles per day. Over the course of five days riders covered 350 miles, with a break for Shabbat at Mitzpe Ramon. The Israel Ride is accessible to riders of all levels.
