Lawrence Schmerzler
Lawrence Jay Schmerzler, 92, of Verona died Oct. 16, 2014. Born in Brooklyn, he lived most of his adult life in Livingston, South Orange, and Verona.
Prof. Schmerzler was Professor Emeritus at New Jersey Institute of Technology from 1953 until he retired, receiving many awards and honors. He and his students built one of the first hybrid cars in the 1960s. He also had a water desalinization project, among many other patents.
Predeceased by his wife Pearl in 1970, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Glory; four daughters, Marla (Tom) Netzel, Laura (Joel) Oppenheimer, Julie Brill (Mark Miller), and Mimi Brill (David Roundtree); his son, Nicholas Brill; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held Oct. 20 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
