Rabbi Max Edwards will be installed as assistant rabbi of Temple B’nai Abraham in Livingston tonight, during Friday evening services.

Rabbi Edwards was ordained in June by Hebrew College of Newton, Mass, and became B’nai Abraham’s assistant rabbi then. He earned his master’s degree in Jewish education at the same time, and he was B’nai Abraham’s rabbinical assistant during his senior year of rabbinical school. He also worked as a chaplain at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

“We are so blessed as a community to have Rabbi Max Edwards as our assistant rabbi,” said Rabbi David Vaisberg, the shul’s senior rabbi. “The middle of a pandemic is a challenging time to start any new job, let alone a position that helps lead a spiritual community. But Rabbi Edwards is up for the task. He brings his wisdom, warmth, humor, and care to TBA, and we’re better for it.”

TBA’s president, Julie Silbermann, also was enthusiastic. “I’m thrilled to welcome Rabbi Max Edwards to the Temple B’nai Abraham family,” she said. “Rabbi Edwards brings a wonderful perspective and enthusiasm to our clergy team. I am looking forward to working with him, learning from him, and having him be our assistant rabbi.”

Rabbi Edwards said he was attracted to TBA’s commitment to its distinct identity, as an independent synagogue with a unique blend of tradition, egalitarianism, and forward-looking values. He lives in South Orange with his fiancée, Evie Rosenthal, and their dog.

The shul’s in-person service is available to people who are vaccinated or have tested negative for covid within 48 hours before the service, which also will be streamed live on the synagogue’s Facebook page.
