Mark Lerner
Mark Stephen Lerner, 66, of South Orange died Feb. 4, 2015. He grew up in Millburn.
In 1969, Mr. Lerner began working for the Erie Lackawanna Railroad and culminated his 47-year railroad career as a conductor for NJ Transit.
After graduating from Millburn High School, he attended Monmouth University, working summers for the Pennsylvania and Morristown and Erie Railroads.
He was a passionate supporter of the railroad industry and public transportation. A bluegrass banjo picker, he was an avid collector of American roots, blues, and ethnic music, with extensive knowledge of the folklore, architecture, and early industries of the Northeast.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Carol Beth Lipman; his mother, Rose of Millburn; and a sister, Ellen (Jonathan Cohen) of New York City.
Services were held Feb. 8 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union. Memorial contributions may be made to National Association of Railroad Passengers or the Nature Conservancy.
