Marvin Chirls

Marvin Chirls (Chirelstein), 88, of Morristown died Dec. 16, 2017. He was born and raised in Newark and was a longtime resident of Livingston and Short Hills before moving to Morristown more than 20 years ago. 

An orthopedic surgeon in private practice for approximately 60 years, Dr. Chirls was affiliated with Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark and St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. After retiring from surgery, he continued orthopedic consulting and offering expert witness testimony for defense attorneys and insurance companies.

He graduated from Weequahic High School, Newark, and earned his M.D. from Howard University, including an internship at Georgetown University. He completed his degree in orthopedic surgery with an internship and residency at Hospital for Joint Diseases. 

He served as an orthopedic surgeon in the Army, stationed in Ft. Dix and then at Ft. Devens, Mass., with honorable discharge in 1960 as captain. 

An avid golfer, he was a member of Cedar Hills Country Club and also had a passion for fly-fishing. 

He is survived by his wife of over 45 years, Patsy (Patricia) Porter Chirls; two sons, Clifford A. of the Seattle area and David S. of Brooklyn; his daughter, Laura C. Harris of the Big Sur, Calif., area; two stepsons, Michael A. Blum of the Los Angeles area and Steven E. Blum of the Miami area; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
