Maurice Meyers

Maurice Meyers, 85, of Watchung died May 6, 2011. Born and raised in Plainfield, he moved to Watchung in 1966.

Dr. Meyers received his bachelor’s degree from New York University in 1948 and his doctorate as a member of New Jersey College of Medicine’s charter class in 1964. Prior to retiring 15 years ago, he worked as an attending physician at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield for over 40 years.

He served during World War II in the Seventh Army’s Third Infantry Division, and was awarded the American Theater and the European-African-Middle Eastern ribbons, the Good Conduct Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Silver and Bronze stars. He was recently awarded the Insignia of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest honor, for his contributions to France’s liberation during World War II. His memoir, Reflections on My War, was published this year.

He had been a member of the Plainfield Masonic Lodge and the Watchung Writers Group, which met every Thursday at the public library.

Predeceased by his daughter Mindy in 1992, he is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ruth Knauer Meyers; a son, Marc of Berkeley Heights; a daughter, Charna Meyers of Brooklyn; and a grandson.

Services were held May 8 with arrangements by Higgins Home for Funerals, Watchung.
