Melvin Cohen

Melvin “Mel” Cohen, 68, of Wayside died July 12, 2011. Born in Brooklyn, he lived first in Freehold and then in Ocean Township for many years.

Mr. Cohen was executive director of the Jewish Family and Children Service of Greater Monmouth County for 30 years before retiring in 2006. In that capacity, he worked closely with the Jewish Federation of Monmouth County, United Way, Monmouth University, JCC of Greater Monmouth County, and other county social service agencies and programs.

He graduated from Brooklyn College and earned a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University.

He was a member of Temple Beth Miriam in Elberon.

He is survived by his wife, Sandy; a son, David Brian; a daughter, Deena Beth; a stepson, David Chamberlain; a stepdaughter, Amy Chamberlain; a brother, Norman; a sister, Lenore Garry; and four grandchildren.

Services were held July 14 with arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gift of Life Foundation.
