Michael Spier

Michael Spier, 88, of Maplewood died Nov. 25, 2010. Born in Poland, he was a Holocaust survivor whose mother and four siblings were killed in the Shoa. He escaped death when the gas chambers at Auschwitz malfunctioned, and was subsequently sent to — and escaped from — Blechhammer Concentration Camp. He came to the United States in 1949, residing first in Newark before moving to Maplewood 45 years ago.

Mr. Warman worked as a commercial artist for Nielsen & Company in New York City.

He was a member of Cafe Europa.

He is survived by his wife, Rose (Lichtenstein); two sons, Bernard and Norman, both of Maplewood; and two grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 28 with arrangements by Menorah Chapels at Millburn, Union.
