Nathan G. Kupperman

Nathan (“Nate”) G. Kupperman, 95, of West Orange died Nov. 13, 2014. Born in Hopedale, Mass., he moved to Newark as a young child.

Mr. Kupperman joined his brother Sol in their father’s dry cleaning business, Kupperman & Sons, on Newark’s South Street. Later, he added a men’s clothing store at the same location. His son Stewart continues his father’s business, Nate Kupperman Clothes, in Union, where he moved the store in 2006 after his father’s retirement.

He graduated from Weequahic High School in 1937. 

After working in Bamberger’s as a stock clerk, he joined the U.S. Army. He served in World War II, during which he earned a Bronze Star, among other awards.

He was a past president of the Newark Rotary Club. He was an active Mason, a past president of Congregation Beth El in South Orange, and a member of several Jewish societies, including Erste Basheder and the Admiral Sampson Harrison Lodge. He and his wife were contributors to New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.

He was an active golfer, fisherman, and bowler throughout his lifetime.

His wife of almost 72 years, Anne, died two months after him. He is survived by his daughter, Maxene Kupperman-Guiñals of New York City, two sons, Arthur (Bonnie) of Gulfport, Fla., and Stewart (Amy) of Mt. Arlington; a sister, Beatrice Fink of Springfield; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
