Cantor Ilana Goldman
Cantor Ilana Goldman

Cantor Ilana Goldman was installed as the assistant cantor of Temple Emanu-El of Westfield on Friday, October 22. The shul community has been impressed by Cantor Goldman’s joy, wisdom, and warmth, along with her ability to connect with congregants of different ages and spiritual needs. She adds beautiful music on Shabbat and holidays, inspires young children to sing in the youth choir, brings energy and love to the preschool families, and guides b’nai mitzvah students and families with compassion and support.

Cantor Goldman received her master’s degree in sacred music and was ordained from Hebrew Union College — Jewish Institute of Religion. When she was in cantorial school, she held student pulpits at Temple Micah in Washington, Vassar Temple in Poughkeepsie, the Scarsdale Synagogue, and the East End Temple in Manhattan. She also trained as a chaplain intern at Bellevue Hospital, where she completed two units of clinical pastoral education, learning to bring music, prayer, and comfort to patients during the pandemic.

Her installation included music, blessings, and songs from the clergy of Temple Emanu-El — its senior rabbi, Ethan Prosnit; its senior cantor, Martha Novick, and its associate rabbi, Victor Appell. Cantor Goldman also was joined by two of her mentors, Cantors Benjie Ellen Schiller and Cantor Chanin Becker; a performance from the TEWNIES (that’s Temple Emanu-El’s youth choir, which she founded), and a performance with her mom, Amy Goldman, on cello.
