New exhibit at Heidi Gallery at JSDD in Livingston

The Heidi Gallery at JSDD in Livingston is opening its third annual juried group exhibition, “The WAE Open.” The exhibit, to be open from October 10 to December 8, will showcase 62 works from 42 talented artists from New Jersey and the tristate area. The artwork is available for sale, admission is free, and the gallery will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with additional viewings available by appointment.

There will be an opening reception from 6 to 9 p.m. on October 10; the Best in Show award winner will be announced there. An artists’ tour and closing reception is set for December 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. For an invitation to either reception, call JSDD at (973) 272-7148 or email HeidiGallery@jsdd.org.

Nigel Freeman and Tricia Laughlin Bloom judged the art. Mr. Freeman is the director of fine art at Swann Auction Galleries, where he also is the lead African American art specialist, supervising sales of works of artists including Elizabeth Catlett, Hughie Lee-Smith, and Faith Ringgold. He is also a print appraiser on the PBS series “Antiques Roadshow.”

Ms. Bloom is the senior curator of American art at the Newark Museum of Art. A specialist in modern and contemporary art, she earned a master’s degree in 19th- and 20th-century art criticism and theory from SUNY Stony Brook and a Ph.D. in modern and contemporary art from Rutgers University.

On October 20, from 6 to 9 p.m., Carolyn Dorfman and her company will dance. On November 3, from 2 to 4 p.m., Marcia LeBeau, founding director of the Write Space, will lead a poetry workshop. She also will host an ekphrastic poetry reading on December 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. There, local poets will read their work, inspired by the dynamic art from “The WAE Open.” The workshops are made possible by funds from the Essex County Department of Cultural Affairs, a partner of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
