Norman Cohen to speak at Beth El in South Orange

Dr. Norman Cohen, professor emeritus of midrash and former dean of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, will give the Rabbi Jehiel Orenstein Memorial Lecture at Congregation Beth El in South Orange on Sunday, May 21, at 7 p.m.  Cohen, who lectures widely on modern interpretations of the Torah, will discuss “The Challenge of Hineini in Our Lives: Responding to Those We Love.” A dessert reception will follow.

Dr. Cohen, author of six books, was featured in Bill Moyers’s “Genesis: A Living Conversation” on PBS in 1996.

The annual lecture at Beth El is a gift of the Orenstein family in memory of Rabbi Orenstein, who served for 35 years as spiritual leader of Beth El and retired in 2005. He died in 2013.

The lecture is free and open to the public. Call 973-763-0111.
