Only in America!

Waiting to cross Broadway at 19th Street in New York City on the second day of Rosh Hashana, my husband and granddaughter and I found ourselves next to an ultra-Orthodox gentleman. I quietly wished him a Happy New Year with the traditional greeting, L’shana tova. “Are you Jewish?” he inquired. “Yes,” I answered. “Did you hear the shofar today?” he asked. When I answered that I had not, he waited until we crossed the street, then proceeded to take out a prayer book, daven, and produce a shofar from inside his long black coat, put it to his lips and blow the familiar blasts to thrill us — and everyone else within hearing distance. It was magnificent!
