Philip Scheps

Philip Scheps, 89, of West Orange died Jan. 11, 2014. Born and raised in Newark, he lived in West Orange for over 50 years.

Mr. Scheps made his career with New York Life as a successful life insurance salesman. He sold insurance throughout New Jersey and was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table for 40-plus years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served as a combat medic during World War II. While attached to the 406th Infantry unit, he helped capture 19 German soldiers. He was awarded many medals for his service, including the Bronze Star, Good Conduct, American Campaign, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medals.

Predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis, and his son Robert, he is survived by his son William (Carolyn) of Port Jervis, NY; a sister, Shirley Goodman of Monroe; his longtime companion, Miriam Braun of West Orange; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 14 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
