Phyllis Spies

Phyllis A. Spies, 94, of Monmouth Beach died Jan. 19, 2013. Born in Jersey City, she had also resided in Maplewood and Elberon.

Mrs. Spies worked for the Asbury Park Press for 10 years.

A graduate of Marjorie Webster Finishing School in Washington, DC, she volunteered for the Red Cross during World War II, driving an ambulance and rolling bandages.

She was a volunteer at Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation in West Orange, and loved golf, bridge, and dogs.

Predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Jack Okin Spies, and her daughter, Penny Spies, she is survived by her son, Peter and his wife, Linda of Monmouth Beach; her daughters, Sally J. Spies and her husband Michael Swanger of Oceanport, and Carol J. Spies of Monmouth Beach; her six grandchildren; and her two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Jan. 21 with arrangements by Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Ocean Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkinson's Association.
