Protecting ourselves

We are in a crisis situation. Boycotts against Israeli products and against businesses that do business with Israel are spreading around the U.S. and the free world.

I am a psychiatrist and the daughter of Holocaust survivors. I take “never again” seriously. If we remain silent, criticize Israel for not being perfect, or fight among ourselves, the enemies of Israel, the U.S., and the free world will have a good chance of success. If Israel is not perceived by her enemies as invincible, Israel risks destruction. If there is open disagreement between the U.S. and Israel, both countries are in danger.

We must act. I presented a course, “Israel Inside/Out” at Beth El Synagogue. You can take the course on-line or you can recommend that an organization, church, or synagogue present the course live. You will take an exciting journey through time and discover the fascinating history of the State of Israel. This interdisciplinary approach provides an unparalleled view of both ancient and modern-day Israel. You will learn about shared threats and values between Israel and the U.S.

I also screened two must-see films, Crossing the Line, (www.campusintifada.com) and The Third Jihad (www.thethirdjihad.com).

Before we can protect ourselves, Israel, and the U.S. against the danger that militant Islam presents, we must educate ourselves, our children, and our friends. Israel is a wonderful country. It is a democracy with a superb record of human rights, the rule of law, women’s rights, gay rights, and religious freedom. It is a democracy in a bad neighborhood.
