Ramapo Holocaust program to receive donation

The Częstochover Society and Relief Committee, represented by Lea Wolinetz and Harry Rapaport, will present a significant donation to the Gross Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Ramapo College of New Jersey on September 20. The presentation, in the Gross Center, LC-215 at 2:30 p.m., is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

“With this small ceremony, we mark the beginning of what we know will be a lasting relationship between our two organizations,” the Gross Center’s director, Dr. Jacob Ari Labendz, said. “The Gross Center is honored to help keep the memory of Jewish Częstochowa Poland alive for future generations.”

Lea Wolinetz and Harry Rapaport will return to Ramapo on October 25 to speak with the campus community and with students enrolled in Dr. Labendz’s course, “Paradigms of Genocide.” They will talk about the history of Jews in and from Częstochowa, Poland. Mr. Rapaport will tell his family’s story of murder and survival, which motivated his efforts to rescue Torah scrolls that the Jews of Częstochowa his during the Holocaust. Ms. Wolinetz will offer a history of the diaspora of Częstochowa Jews, before and after the war.

The program is part of the college’s Open Classroom Series, where the public is invited into Ramapo’s classrooms to learn from guest lecturers alongside students. The talk will be delivered in webinar format. Go to www.ramapo.edu/holocaust.
