Rhoda Chester
Rhoda Chester (Glade), 93, of Gainesville, Fla., died July 6, 2015. She was born in the Bronx.
Mrs. Chester was involved with many volunteer organizations, including Hadassah, the Sherman Avenue Talmud Torah and its Women’s Auxiliary in Jersey City, Haven Hospice, and Congregation B’nai Israel of Gainesville and its sisterhood. She was named “A Woman of Valor” by Hadassah and was the Sherman Avenue Talmud Torah’s “Woman of the Year.” She led a variety of fund-raising projects, including several gift shops, thrift shops, dinner dances, and bake sales. She was devoted to working with children and the continuance of Jewish education and Zionist endeavors.
She graduated from James Madison High School, Brooklyn.
Predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Edward, and a son, HB, she is survived by her children, Douglas L. of Union and Terry L. and Suzanne, both of Gainesville, 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were held July 8 with arrangements by Ross’ Shalom Chapels, Springfield. Memorial contributions may be made to Hadassah’s Gainesville chapter and “Chavaya!” or the Friendship Circle at Congregation B’nai Israel, Gainesville.
