Rita Singer
Rita Singer, 87, of West Orange died March 1, 2014. Born in the German town of Johannesburg, she was the youngest of six children, all of whom escaped Germany, with Rita placed on the Kindertransport to England, where she was raised by a foster family until she graduated from high school. She was reunited with her sisters in Glasgow, Scotland, where she eventually met her husband, Abraham Singer. In 1950, they moved to Troy, NY, where she lived for more than 40 years.
Mrs. Singer was active in various Jewish organizations in Troy, serving as president of the sisterhood of Temple Beth El and the Troy chapter of Hadassah.
Predeceased by her husband of almost 64 years in 2013, she is survived by two daughters, Lorraine (Harvey) Rappoport and Beena (Steven) Levy; her son, L. Jeffrey; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held March 4 with arrangements by Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston.
